Legal Aid Alberta – Corporate Intranet
As the organization responsible for providing equal access to Alberta’s
justice system for all, Legal Aid Alberta maintains fifteen offices across
the province, providing legal information, advice and services for thousands
of Albertans every year. Legal Aid Alberta turned to iomer internet
solutions to help connect their employees with the organization using
the web.
Situation
With a few hundred employees spread out across the province, Legal Aid Alberta
needed a way for employees to share information, as well as reduce the effort
associated with day-to-day employee processes, such as purchasing, expense
reporting and human resource management.

Solution
Legal Aid Alberta chose iomer to deliver a web-based solution that would help
resolve operational issues as well as increase efficiency – giving
employees the opportunity to focus more on their roles within the organization,
rather than traditional business challenges.
Legal Aid Alberta’s intranet will act as a hub for information workers
within the organization, providing a bridge between disparate information sources.
As a home for policies, workplace information, templates and forms used throughout
Legal Aid Alberta’s offices, the intranet provides a “one-stop
shop” for critical business processes.
One of the key features of the Legal Aid Alberta is how employees can access
information. Different information workers within the organization should have
access to different information. Prior to the launch of the intranet, Legal
Aid Alberta employees stored essential information in file shares throughout
the network, as well as relied heavily on storage on their personal hard drive.
With the intranet, employees now have access to the resources that they need,
when they need them. And, through some creative development with XML, metadata
and search, information workers now only have access to the resources they
need.
The team at iomer also recognized the need to provide value-added services
for Legal Aid Alberta employees on the intranet to draw information workers
to the web. A few examples of this include:
Online Purchasing Management
The current purchasing process relied heavily on paper-based forms and e-mail.
iomer worked with Legal Aid Alberta to model their purchasing process through
a web-based interface, improving the efficiency of decision making within
the organization.
Online Expense Tracking
With hundreds of employees spread out across the province, expense reporting
was a headache for both employees and managers alike. Through an innovative
online approach, iomer worked with Legal Aid Alberta to produce an online
expense reporting system – completely eliminating the need for paper-based
forms and snail mail.
Online Vacation Requests
In any organization, employees look forward to taking vacations. By integrating
with Microsoft Dynamics GP and Exchange Server 2003, iomer was able to bring
that excitement to the intranet by facilitating vacation requests, and managerial
planning for vacations.
